Welcome to the Vocational Education Faculty at New College Leicester.

Key Stage 4

In KS4 students can gain an insight into the world of work within the hair, beauty and care industry. Students follow a programme designed by the vocational education department which allows them to investigate various career opportunities and develop their knowledge of these sectors.

In Years 10 and 11 students at New College Leicester can study City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Award in Hair and Beauty Studies (3038-21) and BTEC Level 2 First Award in Health and Social Care.

These subjects allow the student to gain knowledge and understanding of the two sectors ready for employment. Many of the skills learnt are transferable to many other industries.

We follow a scheme of work which is designed by the awarding body in both areas which is modified specifically for our students.

Health and Social Care:

Our Year 10 & Year 11 students are studying BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care Level 1/2 (Syllabus Number 603/4780/X).

Components studied are:

Component 1 – Human Lifespan Development

During Component 1 students will:

  • explore how individuals develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually over time
  • investigate how various factors, events and choices impact individuals’ growth and development
  • discover how people adapt to life events and cope with making changes

Component 2 – Health and Social Care Services and Values

During Component 2 students will:

  • learn which health and social care services are available
  • identify why people might need to use these services
  • discover who’s involved in providing these services
  • explore what might stop people from accessing the services they need
  • look at the care values in the sector and how to make sure people get the care and protection they need

Component 3 – Health and Well-being

During Component 3 students will:

  • learn what ‘being healthy’ means to different people
  • explore the different factors that might influence health and wellbeing
  • identify key health indicators and how to interpret them
  • assess an individual’s health using what they’ve learned
  • create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for that person, which includes targets and recommendations of support services available
  • reflect on the potential challenges the person may face when putting the plan into action

We follow a scheme of work which is designed by the awarding body, Edexcel, and adapt to individually meet the needs of our students. Each component 1 and 2 are internally assessed and then moderated by BTEC with component 3 being externally moderated with a two hour exam.

 
A BTEC is a vocational qualification, which means that it has a career focus and is grounded in the world of work. BTEC students study to gain skills and knowledge in their subject area, then put those skills into practice in real-life scenarios.

 

Key Stage 5

After Key Stage 4 students can then continue to study both subject areas in the 6th form. In hairdressing students can take the practical qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3 to work in a professional salon as a stylist.

In this subject area, along with their main study in college, students will carry out work experience.

Unit 202 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
Unit 203 Cut hair using basic techniques
Unit 204 Style set and dress hair
Unit 205 Colour and lighten hair
