Good Progress for All

Mrs Simpson

Welcome to the Inclusion Faculty at New College Leicester.

In line with the principles of the Special Education Needs code of practice 2014, we aim as a college to provide students with additional/or differentiated support in order to enable them to access the curriculum and make progress.

We work closely with subject areas and offer small group intervention in English, Maths and Science.

Students with the greatest need work in small groups on the Read, Write Inc literacy programme. We also offer the Better Reading Partnership (BWRP) provided by both skilled Teaching Assistants, subject teachers, administration staff and volunteer readers. (If you wish to become a volunteer please contact Ms Edel Concannon for more information on 0116 231 8500).

Miss Mayes

Staff within the Inclusion Faculty offer support within classes as well as providing 1:1 support and small group intervention. We believe in working closely with subject areas, students and parents/carers to ensure progress and achievement for all. Student progress is discussed twice a year with parents/carers through SEN review meetings and once a year, informally by telephone. However, if the need arises, we actively encourage parents/carers to contact us at the college regarding any concerns they may have with their son/daughters education. As a faculty we monitor the academic progress of all students on the SEN register half termly using subject teachers assessment data.

The Inclusion Faculty maintain positive communication and relationships with various professional bodies including:

  • Educational Psychology Service (EPS)
  • Complex Learning, Interaction and Communication Support Team (CLCI – formally LAST)
  • Leicester Partnership School & Federation Partnership Outreach Placements Team
  • Hearing and Visual Impairment Team
  • Child Health Services such as CAMHS
  • The Children’s Hospital School
  • Youth Offending Team (YOS)

Miss E Maguire – EAL Coordinator/Teaching and Learning

There is a dedicated team of 15 Teaching Assistants, 2 full time administers and 2 cover supervisors, many of whom have individual responsibilities including:

  • Numeracy Intervention
  • Literacy Intervention
  • Science Intervention
  • Accelerated Reader
  • Behaviour Support
  • BRWP
  • Break and lunchtime club
  • Toe by Toe
  • Boost Group – KS3

  • EAL support

To ensure that students on the SEN register have a smooth and worry free transition from KS2 to KS3, we liaise with the receiving Head of Year within the college and our feeder primary schools to organise additional visits / workshops as appropriate. For the 10th year running we are hosting a 3 day transition programme for students who have been identified as needing additional support by their primary school.

New College Leicester were awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark for the forth cycle running in April 2017 with the recommendation that they become a Centre of Excellence. We were awarded the CoE in May 2017 and have recently been re-accredited with this award in April 2018. This is something we as a college are extremely proud of. Please see the link below for a summary of the college’s feedback from IQM.
