History is the study of the past and how our society has developed and changed over time. Students at New College Leicester follow a rigorous knowledge based curriculum with skills seen as effective ways to learn more about what happened in the past.


Key Stage 3

An outline of what students will study during their time at New College Leicester throughout Key Stage 3 is set out in the the below:


Year 7 Year 8
Autumn Term 1 The Norman Conquest The Age of Empire
Autumn Term 2 Key Monarchs in English History The Slave Trade
Spring Term 1 Key Monarchs in English History History of Protest
Spring Term 2 Life in Medieval England The Great War
Summer Term 1 The Industrial Revolution World War Two
Summer Term 2 The Age of Empire The Holocaust


As well as learning about historical processes students will also learn key skills which will help them achieve in their GCSE years.

The skills include:

  • Describing – Giving accurate and detailed descriptions of periods, event and people.
  • Explaining – Giving detailed and accurate reasons for changes that have happened in the past.
  • Inferring – Using historical sources to reach logical conclusions.
  • Interpretations – Analysing and making judgements about interpretations from the past.

Key Stage 4

For Years 9, 10 and 11 Key Stage 4 (GCSE) the students will be studying the new Edexcel 1-9 GCSE course (1HI0P).

Students study units focused on:

  • British medicine from 1250 to the present day (30%).
  • Anglo Saxon and Norman England (20%).
  • Superpower relations and the Cold War (20%).
  • Weimar and Nazi Germany (30%).

Students following this course will sit three exams at the end of Year 11. There is no controlled assessment. The dates for the exams for the 2018-19 examination series are below:

  • Monday 3rd June 2019 – Medicine through time exam (1 hour 15 minutes).
  • Thursday 6th June 2019 – Anglo Saxon and Norman England and Superpower Relations and the Cold War exam (1 hour 45 minutes).
  • Tuesday 11th June 2019 – Germany 1918 – 1939 exam (1 hour 20 minutes).
