History is the study of the past and how our society has developed and changed over time. Students at New College Leicester follow a rigorous knowledge based curriculum with skills seen as effective ways to learn more about what happened in the past.


Key Stage 3

An outline of what students will study during their time at New College Leicester throughout Key Stage 3 is set out in the the below:

Summer Term 2 The Industrial Revolution The Inter-War years Religious Conflict


As well as learning about historical processes students will also learn key skills which will help them achieve in their GCSE years.

The skills include:

  • Describing – Giving accurate and detailed descriptions of periods, event and people.
  • Explaining – Giving detailed and accurate reasons for changes that have happened in the past.
  • Inferring – Using historical sources to reach logical conclusions.
  • Interpretations – Analysing and making judgements about interpretations from the past.

Key Stage 4

For Years 10 and 11 Key Stage 4 (GCSE) the students will be studying the Edexcel 1-9 GCSE course (1HI0P).

Students study units focused on:

  • British medicine from 1250 to the present day (30%).
  • Anglo Saxon and Norman England (20%).
  • Superpower relations and the Cold War (20%).
  • Weimar and Nazi Germany (30%).

Students following this course will sit three exams at the end of Year 11. There is no controlled assessment. The dates for the exams for the 2019-20 examination series are below:

  • Monday 1st June 2020 – Medicine through time exam (1 hour 15 minutes).
  • Thursday 4th June 2020 – Anglo Saxon and Norman England and Superpower Relations and the Cold War exam (1 hour 45 minutes).
  • Tuesday 9th June 2020 – Germany 1918 – 1939 exam (1 hour 20 minutes).
