The English Department were delighted to host a visit from former BBC journalist and novelist Andy West who has recently released his debut novel ‘The Spirit Engineer.’
Andy very kindly came along to work with our Year 11 students to give advice on how to improve the narrative writing section of their English language exam. Building surprise into their text was the main theme of the session as Andy inspired them to use their imaginations and create a twist in the plot that the examiner wouldn’t see coming. Andy also guided the students through the key areas of narrative writing, including exploring techniques to sustain creativity.
The students very much appreciated Andy’s input and provided some positive feedback:
“I am now able to take something mundane and turn it into the exciting.” – Niah Msundrie.
“It was really fun, and he gave us different techniques to help us think outside the box.” – Tia Brookes.
As for Andy he was full of praise for the students and the staff commenting:
"It was a pleasure to spend a day discussing creative writing with such engaged and motivated students. The way New College Leicester supports and encourages its young people to appreciate literature shines through. I was particularly impressed by the school librarian, English teachers and the clear passion staff have for introducing young minds to books. As a formerly shy student myself, I know how important reading is to help new generations discover themselves."
