Welcome to the Languages Faculty at New College Leicester.
In a modern, globalised world with complex international business and economic relationships, it is not sufficient to communicate solely through English – it is estimated that more than 70% of the world’s population does not speak English and that languages, such as French, are vital to the careers of today’s young people. Furthermore, in light of the referendum and the decision of British people to leave the EU, it is clear that languages will now be a much coveted skill, as the need to communicate and negotiate with our European counterparts becomes all too evident.
Thus, at New College Leicester, we are delighted to offer French at Key stage 3 and 4 and are excited to engage our French learners with an exciting new curriculum, which focuses on skills such as translation – a talent that is becoming increasingly sought and develops and further enhances knowledge in the area of poetry and great French literary works. Moreover, we offer the possibility of an EBacc qualification, something which makes candidates an attractive prospect for universities, colleges and future employers.

Although French is the main language taught at New College Leicester, we also offer a Spanish club for all students at lunchtimes. This has proven very popular amongst lots of students as we prepare them to be able to communicate for a holiday in Spain. We also provide students, for whom English is an additional language, the opportunity to take a GCSE in their home language. We are currently offering Polish, Greek, Persian, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, German, Italian, Dutch and Turkish GCSEs.
Learning a foreign language is very important. Languages improve the quality of students’ lives and their understanding of how other people live and think. It may also improve their ability to find a job with many employers now looking for employees with language skills.
Languages for life! Languages for all!
